The Department of State Services (DSS) has ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor and paid him ₦5 million in compensation following his wrongful detention over involvement with the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
The decision follows a directive by DSS Director-General (DG), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, to review all inherited cases to ensure due process and prompt dispensation of justice.
Nwafor, a native of Isuikwuato Local Government Area (LGA) in Abia state who was arrested in July 2022, is among several individuals released under the new DSS administration.
In an official statement, the DSS explained that the DG had instructed officers to conduct thorough reviews of pending cases, adding that Nwafor’s case was duly considered in line with these directives.
“The gesture, one of the several by the DG, is a testament to his resolve to comply with the rule of law and adherence to the service standard operating procedure,” the statement read.
The DSS also confirmed the release of three other Abia men identified as Udemba, Onyedikachi, and Eze suspected of links to IPOB.
According to the statement, the DG has previously ordered compensation for other wrongfully detained individuals, including an Abuja-based businesswoman, Chineze Ozoadibe, who received ₦10 million following her release.
