Dubai, United Arab Emirates has been hit by unprecedented flooding on Tuesday, April 16, causing chaos across the city as roads are transformed into waterways and residences and businesses are inundated.

Various images captured the Dubai International Airport, ranked as one of the world’s busiest, submerged under water.

Large aircraft also struggled to navigate through floodwaters, resembling boats as they traversed the flooded tarmac.

The flooding disrupted airport operations, with access roads blocked and multiple airlines, including Emirates and Flydubai, facing significant flight delays and cancellations.

This prompted the Emirates to announce the suspension of passenger check-ins due to operational challenges caused by bad weather and road conditions.

The airport urged people to avoid unnecessary travel to the airport, warning of continued flight disruptions.

According to reports, passengers have described spending the night at the airport with hundreds of others after flights were halted, leaving travelers with no transport options out of the terminal.

It was gathered that the rainfall amounted to nearly 4 inches (100 mm) within 12 hours equivalent to Dubai’s average annual rainfall, overwhelming the city’s limited drainage infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Dubai, known for its arid climate, experiences infrequent rainfall and lacks sufficient infrastructure to manage such extreme weather events.

Climate experts have attribute these intense rainfalls to human-driven climate change, which allows the atmosphere to hold more moisture and release it in more intense downpours.

The storm system responsible for the deluge in Dubai also affected neighboring Oman and southeastern Iran, bringing unusually wet weather to these areas.

However, the rain is expected to diminish, lingering showers may persist before dry conditions return.
