The Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against a couple, Udeani Simon Sunday and his wife, Udeani Dorcas Amaka, before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu.

The couple is facing a three-count charge related to land fraud, accused of obtaining the sum of N2,750,000 by pretense.

The charges include inducing someone to deliver money under the false claim of selling a plot of land.

One of the charges against the Udeanis read, “That you Udeani Simon Sunday and Udeani Dorcas Amaka, between 10th July 2019 to 19th December 2019 in Enugu, Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, induced one Onugu Angela Chinyere to deliver to you the sum of Two Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand, Naira (N2,750,000.00) under the pretense.

“That you would sell to her a plot of land behind Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ala-Uguaji along Enugu/Port Harcourt Road, which pretense you knew to be false and thereby committed an offense contrary to Section 1 (1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the  same act.”

During the arraignment, the defendants pleaded not guilty, leading to the prosecution counsel, Nurudeen Ingawa, requesting a trial date.

The defense counsel, E.C. Nwauba Esq, simultaneously applied for bail, which Justice Umar granted.

The bail was set at N5,000,000, with one surety required to be a civil servant not below grade level 10 and residing within the court’s jurisdiction.

However, the case is scheduled for February 6, 2024.

In a separate case, Johnson Aniekwe faced arraignment before Justice Cyprian Ajah of the Enugu State High Court. Aniekwe is charged with three counts, including obtaining N9,170,000 through pretense, forgery, and personation.

The charges allege that Aniekwe induced someone to deliver money under the pretense of allocating two plots of land.

Aniekwe pleaded not guilty, and after the prosecution counsel, Nurudeen Ingawa, requested a trial date, the defense counsel A.G. Anyigo sought bail for the defendant.

Justice Ajah granted the bail application, setting the next court date for March 7, 2024.
