Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla incorporated (Inc.) has backed a call to impeach the president of the United States (US), Donald Trump, amidst a deepening public rift between both men.
He confirmed this on Thursday, June 5 after replying ‘Yes’ to a post by an X user calling for Trump’s impeachment and asking for him to be replaced by Vice President (VP) JD Vance.
Musk who resigned last month as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), had earlier criticized Trump’s proposed ‘Big, Beautiful Bill,’ which aims to extend tax cuts, tighten eligibility for federal aid, and raise the national debt ceiling.
He warned that the bill would worsen the country’s financial situation and urged Americans to contact their congressional representatives to oppose it.
Trump swiftly responded, lashing out at Musk for reversing his stance.
He claimed that Musk had been fully aware of the bill’s contents during his time in the administration and had never voiced objections until now.
Trump said, “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here.
“All of a sudden he had a problem.”
He also noted that Musk had threatened to cancel government contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink.
However, Musk replied him by announcing that SpaceX would begin shutting down its Dragon spacecraft program, which transports crew and cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).
