The Federal Government has officially converted Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, into a federal university after receiving a proposal from the Ogun State Government.
Expressing appreciation for the decision, the Ogun State Government lauded the federal authorities for integrating TASUED into the nation’s network of federal institutions.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Dapo Abiodun described the transition as a significant step that would enhance the university’s role as a specialized institution for teacher education.
He further reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to educational development, affirming that TASUED will remain a leading centre for excellence in training educators across the country.
“The transition is expected to attract increased funding, enhance infrastructure development, and elevate TASUED’s national recognition, further solidifying Ogun State’s status as a hub for academic excellence in Nigeria,” the statement said.
TASUED was founded in 2005 by the Ogun State Government as Nigeria’s pioneer institution dedicated exclusively to teacher education. The university was named in honor of Tai Solarin, a renowned social activist and the visionary behind Mayflower School in Ikenne.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, highlighted that TASUED holds the distinction of being the first federally owned tertiary institution in the Ogun-East senatorial district.
“With a well-developed infrastructure and academic programme, the transition requires minimal federal investment,” Onanuga noted.
“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who began the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria and Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating our children and impacting patriotic and leadership lessons in them at Mayflower School in Ikenne.
“It is also in honour of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment,” he added.
President Tinubu described the conversion of TASUED into a federal institution as a strategic move to strengthen teacher education and improve instructional quality at all levels of learning across the country.
With this transition, TASUED becomes the third federally administered university of education, joining Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo under the federal government’s oversight.
The integration of TASUED into the federal system brings the total number of newly established federal universities of education to seven.
These Universities are: Federal University of Education, Kano, Kano State; Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State; Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo, Ondo State; Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, Imo State; Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State; and the Federal University of Education, Kontagora, Niger State.
