Gunmen on Friday, June 17, in Nsukka, Enugu state, killed a police operative and set ablaze patrol vehicles in two different police check points in the region.
The policeman was killed in Umanu junction, Nsukka, while some police patrol vehicles were set ablaze along Ibeagwa-Ani road in the area, according to The Guardian.
An eyewitness who resides around Umanu junction said, “I quickly rushed to my doors to ensure that they were properly locked as soon as I started hearing sporadic gunshots.
“I switched off all electric lights in my house, and asked my wife and children to keep quiet because I thought the gunmen were was armed robbers.
“After the gunshots had ceased, I saw people rushing to the junction to see the lifeless body of the policeman who was killed during the gun duel between police team at the check point and the gunmen,” he added.
A trader, who was an eyewitness at the Ibeagwa-Ani road incident where police vans were set ablaze stated that he was in a commercial bus going to Ibeagwa-Ani market when they sighted the vans on fire with five armed men who masked their faces watching the vehicles.
“As soon as our driver sighted the gunmen, he had to reverse the bus, and drove to a safer zone, where we watched until they zoomed off while shooting sporadically,” he said.
Daniel Ndukwe, the state police public relations officer, while confirming the incident, said, “There was an attack on police operatives in Nsukka today (Friday) but the details are still sketchy.”
