The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has reported that Nigeria’s 36 states received a total of 22.90 billion naira from the Ecological Fund between January and May 2025, disbursed through the Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC.
The Ecological Fund is part of the federal government’s revenue allocation and is intended to address environmental challenges including erosion, desertification, flooding, oil spills, and drought. It is overseen by the Ecological Fund Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
In April, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, warned that 1,249 communities across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, face a high risk of flooding this year, while 2,187 communities in 293 local government areas were identified as being at moderate risk.
States at particularly high flood risk include Abia, Benue, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Jigawa. In 2024, flooding claimed 321 lives, affected more than 1.37 million people, and displaced over 740,000 nationwide.
During the five-month period, Kano received the largest allocation at 1.29 billion naira, followed by Lagos (1.09 billion) and Borno (1.01 billion). Other top recipients included Katsina (997.04 million), Bauchi (970.20 million), and Oyo (909.73 million), while Bayelsa, a high-risk flood state, received 358.80 million.
By geopolitical zones, the north-west received the highest total at 5.85 billion, followed by the south-west (4.59 billion) and the north-east (4.36 billion). The south-east got 3.15 billion, the north-central 2.54 billion, and the south-south the least with 2.40 billion.
