Lagos-based Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu won an Emmy Award on Saturday, September 12, 2026, for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s ‘Eyes of Wakanda’.
Dunkwu received the award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design, for the episode ‘Into the Lion’s Den’ from the Disney+ animated series.
The Television Academy named him among the 2026 juried Emmy winners, with the awards presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies in Los Angeles in September.
Unlike regular competitive Emmy categories, juried awards are determined by panels of industry professionals, who may select one, multiple or no recipients.
Dunkwu, who is based in Lagos, is a visual development artist, character designer, animation director and educator. His professional portfolio includes work for major entertainment companies such as Marvel, Netflix and Disney.
Dunkwu studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin but developed his artistic skills independently before moving into comics, illustration, concept art and animation.
IMDb lists him as a character designer on ‘Eyes of Wakanda’, as well as the animated series ‘Iyanu and Iyanu’: ‘The Age of Wonders’.
Dunkwu joined the production of ‘Eyes of Wakanda’ in August 2021 as an early concept artist.
He worked on initial character ideation under the direction of Todd Harris and developed early designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni.
The designs later helped guide the character development across the series under the supervision of Joshua James Shaw.
Dunkwu subsequently refined Noni and contributed designs to all four episodes, working on characters including Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari, High Councilman Rakim, an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain and crowd characters.
The Emmy-winning episode, ‘Into the Lion’s Den’, follows a rogue Wakandan general known as the Lion.
The series follows Wakandan warriors across different periods of history as they attempt to recover vibranium artefacts and protect Wakanda.
Following the announcement of his Emmy win, Dunkwu described the recognition as a significant moment for him and his family and dedicated the achievement to emerging artists from Nigeria and the Global South.
He said the award demonstrated that Nigerian creatives could compete on the global stage.
“Out of hundreds of entries, my work on ‘Eyes Of Wakanda’ was selected as worthy for an Emmy win, Dunkwu said in a post shared after receiving the Television Academy’s notification.
He added, “This win is for the rising talents from Nigeria and the global south. We can compete on the world stage!”
Dunkwu also thanked Marvel Studios, the Television Academy and members of the Eyes of Wakanda creative team for the opportunity to contribute to the project.
Dunkwu’s work on ‘Eyes of Wakanda’ involved character designs influenced by African aesthetics, reflecting the series’ focus on African history, culture and visual traditions.
The wider visual development of the series also involved artists from different parts of Africa, including Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.
For Dunkwu, the project provided an opportunity to contribute to a major global franchise while drawing on his experience in African character design.
The Emmy is not his first major recognition for his work on ‘Eyes of Wakanda’. He previously received a Concept Art Association award for animated-series character concept art for Noni.
Dunkwu has also used his online platforms to document his creative process and share tutorials, courses and educational content focused on character design.
His Emmy win adds to an international career built largely from Lagos, where he continues to work and mentor aspiring artists interested in entering the global animation industry.
