The Lagos State Police Command has taken a 60-year-old man, Ajayi Femi, into custody over the alleged rape of a 24-year-old woman.

The incident, which was first reported on August 22 by the victim’s sister, has since been assigned to the Command’s Gender Unit for a thorough investigation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the suspect is accused of drugging the victim by spiking her drink, leaving her unconscious, before carrying out the assault.

“Investigation, including medical tests by the Gender Unit, revealed that on the same day, the suspect spiked the survivor’s drink, rendering her unconscious before having unlawful sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

“The suspect also made a confessional statement to that effect. He has since been charged in court and remanded in prison custody pending the next adjourned date given by the court,” the statement read.

According to Hundeyin, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reiterated the Command’s resolve to secure justice for survivors of sexual violence.

He urged residents to promptly report incidents of sexual offences at the Family Support Units located in divisional and area command offices to ensure swift investigation and prosecution.
