Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has announced that she will dedicate her upcoming 65th birthday on September 21 to the completion of the National Library project.
In a video message shared on social media, Tinubu said she intends to mark the day quietly in thanksgiving to God, while encouraging well-wishers to channel their gifts and greetings towards supporting the library’s completion.
She explained that her passion for education inspired the decision, stressing that the project holds great significance for the country’s future.
“I will be turning 65 years old on the 21st September and this happens to be a Sunday. This is why I have decided to dedicate the day to God for all His blessings in my life by having a quiet birthday,” she said.
Appealing to friends and supporters, she requested that instead of sending cards, cakes, flowers, newspaper messages or other presents, they should contribute funds to an account created specifically for the project.
According to her, the initiative is being coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education under the “Oluremi at 65 Education Fund” at Zenith Bank Plc, with account number 1310314977.
The First Lady added that her passion for education inspired the decision, noting that completing the National Library project would be a meaningful legacy for the country.
“The completion of the national library, This would be the best birthday present I could receive. My love for education has informed my decision to dedicate my birthday to this worthy cause,” she added.
In March, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa announced that the federal government was targeting June 2025 for the completion of the first phase of the National Library project.
Since then, however, no public updates have been provided on the progress of the project.
The National Library was originally conceived in 1981, with construction beginning in 2006 and an initial completion deadline set for 2008.
