The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to the Tansian College of Nursing in Oba, Anambra State, reinforcing his commitment to education and healthcare development.
During his visit to the institution on Saturday, March 15, Obi emphasized the importance of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation in driving Nigeria’s progress.
He urged national leaders to prioritize these sectors, describing education as the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty.
Highlighting the success of nations that have invested in human capital, the former Anambra State governor stressed the need for quality education to foster long-term development.
While presenting the cheque, Obi praised Tansian University for its role in training healthcare professionals.
He noted that strengthening the healthcare system starts with equipping institutions to produce skilled medical personnel who can serve society effectively.
Addressing students, he encouraged them to remain focused and committed to their studies, emphasizing that an educated population is essential for national stability and prosperity.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eugene Nwadialor, expressed gratitude for Obi’s continuous support and commitment to advancing education.
“Your philanthropy has already had a profound impact on our institution, and it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you in person,” Nwadialor said.
“Through your generosity, you are not only meeting the immediate needs of the university, but also investing in a brighter future for generations to come.”
During the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eugene Nwadialor drew attention to the plight of 38 nursing students who had been beneficiaries of Monsignor Johnbosco Akam’s scholarship before his passing.
With their funding cut off, the students found themselves unable to continue their education.
Appealing for intervention, Nwadialor urged Peter Obi to extend his generosity and provide financial support to help the affected students complete their studies.
He also took the opportunity to formally invite Obi to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the university’s convocation ceremony scheduled for March 29, 2025.
Expressing confidence in Obi’s impact, he noted that his presence would not only enrich the event but also serve as an inspiration to students.
The gathering was attended by university staff, students, and dignitaries who commended Obi for his continuous investment in education across Nigeria.
Many acknowledged that his support had positively transformed the lives of young people.
Obi was accompanied at the event by his former commissioners, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof. Patrick Obi, and Ndubisi Menakaya.
