A police inspector, Ajele Oloyede, has died after shooting himself at a ceramics company in Igbesa, Ogun State, where he was assigned as part of the security detail.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 14, was discovered on Sunday, March 16.
According to Ogun State police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, the tragedy was uncovered by an officer from Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, identified as Tolorunloju Stephen.
Stephen had returned from Ikeja and found Oloyede resting his head on a table inside the security office.
When asked about his well-being, Oloyede assured him that he was fine.
Shortly after, Stephen placed his bag and pistol on the table and stepped into the restroom.
Moments later, a gunshot rang out.
Upon rushing back, Stephen found Oloyede lying in a pool of blood, having suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“With the help of private security personnel, the wounded officer was immediately taken to Ota General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by the doctor on duty,” Odutola said.
“Police officers visited the scene, and the deceased’s pistol was recovered. His body has been deposited at Ota General Hospital for autopsy, while we have begun notifying his family.”
She stated that the case would be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran for a more detailed investigation.
