Despite the rain on Monday, July 21, retired police officers staged a protest at the entrance gate of the national assembly in Abuja.
During the protest, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Manir Lawal, urged the government to remove police retirees from the existing pension scheme, which he described as exploitative and unfair.
The demonstrators, comprising elderly ex police personnel, were observed holding placards and chanting solidarity songs while standing in the rain, they adamantly insisted that their welfare and dignity had been neglected for an unacceptably long period, demanding their immediate removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
He said, “We are here to ask the government to remove us from the CPS, the pension scheme is exploitative and unjust.
“I am 67 years old. Many of us here are in our 60s and 70s. We have served this country faithfully and deserve to retire in dignity. This scheme has impoverished us. It is our right to demand better.”
Despite the rain, the retirees remained resolute, vowing not to depart until the leadership of the national assembly addressed their concerns.
Security operatives were present, monitoring the protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
