Traders and commuters narrowly escaped tragedy on Thursday, May 30, when a truck carrying containers lost control of its brakes and toppled over onto the Liverpool bridge in Apapa, Lagos State.

Fortunately, the market women conducting business under the Liverpool bridge, selling various items including fish and wares, were spared from potential disaster.

The fenders constructed on the bridge prevented the two containers from falling onto them, averting a disaster.

However, the impact of the containers caused extensive damage to the fenders, with debris scattered around the area beneath the bridge.

This incident recalls a similar incident in Anambra state, where five women lost their lives after a container fell onto a commercial bus at Odumodu junction, Nteje-Awka.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) disclosed this information through the state’s Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, in Awka on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Irelewuyi explained that the container fell off a trailer and crushed the nearby bus.

The fatal accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. when the drivers attempted to avoid a deteriorating section of the road.

According to eyewitnesses, both vehicles, the Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus with registration number XE245AWK and a commercial Leyland truck were traveling to different destinations, one to Awka and the other to Onitsha.

However, when they reached the problematic road section simultaneously, the weight of the container caused it to topple onto the bus.

Irelewuyi further revealed that ten individuals, including three male adults and seven female adults, were involved in the crash.

Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer for the FRSC, also confirmed the incident on the same Friday.
