The Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s invitation to a meeting, insisting that he must formally communicate with them instead of using social media.
The governor, through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, had invited lawmakers for discussions on key issues, including providing a sitting space for the Assembly, payment of outstanding allowances, and the 2025 budget presentation.
However, the 27 lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike signaled they might reject the invitation unless their conditions were met.
Lawmakers, including Isaiah Opuende, criticized Fubara for making the invitation public, arguing that he had previously told them to mind their business. Mocking the invitation, former local government chairmen from Wike’s administration were seen in a viral video singing “Dey your dey,” reinforcing their opposition.
Following the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming their legitimacy, the lawmakers had earlier called on Fubara to present the 2025 budget and submit commissioner nominees.
They also summoned the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, chairman to appear before them. However, the state government delayed action, citing the need for the Certified True Copy, CTC, of the judgment, which was eventually published on March 6.
In an attempt to mend ties, the SSG formally invited the lawmakers to a meeting, reiterating the governor’s commitment to addressing their demands. Meanwhile, the Assembly’s ultimatum for the RSIEC chairman to appear expires today, raising tensions between the two arms of government.
