Wike, PDP allies give conditions for party’s national convention to hold

Some Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leaders aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, have issued new demands for the party’s elective National Convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

At a meeting held on Monday, September 1, the group, comprising former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, declared themselves as Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP.

The group insisted that the National Chairman must remain from the North-Central region, in line with the 2021 zoning arrangement, while rejecting any form of micro-zoning. They warned that failure to uphold these resolutions would invalidate the planned convention, disenfranchising legitimate members.

Their demands include the immediate conduct of fresh, transparent congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, a new South-East Zonal Congress, recognition of the valid South-South Congress held in Calabar as upheld by the courts, and the immediate conduct of the Ekiti State Local Government Congress in line with judicial rulings.

The communique stressed that a credible convention must be based on inclusivity, fairness, and strict respect for court judgments. It cautioned that the party’s unity cannot rest on exclusion or disregard for legal decisions.

The development highlights the continuing friction between Wike’s faction, the PDP National Working Committee, NWC, and the PDP governors, with the party’s cohesion hinging on how these internal disputes are managed ahead of the convention.
