Woman, newborn die at Akwa Ibom hospital, relatives accuse staff of negligence

    The operatives of the Akwa Ibom state police command have arrested a notorious human trafficker, one Alex Omosivie and rescued two of his victims in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

    The state command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Timfon John, confirmed this on Sunday, August 31.

    She said that Omosivie a 47 year old man from Edo State, was arrested on Tuesday at 9 am following credible intelligence.

    John added that a surveillance team, acting on the intelligence, located and apprehended the suspect at a hotel on Ring Road 3 in Uyo, the state capital.

    She disclosed that initial investigations have revealed that the suspect had recently trafficked two other young women: Odo Asuquo Asuquo, 18, to Libya in July, and Glory Asuquo Asuquo, 16, to Burkina Faso on August 18.

    She further stated that the suspect had confessed to the crime, admitting he was paid N50,000 per victim, adding that the parents of the victims, who were already trafficked, have been contacted to provide statements.

    John stated, ”On Tuesday, August 26, at approximately 9 am, operatives of the command arrested a notorious human trafficker, Alex Omosivie, a 47 year old male from Edo State.

    ”The arrest was made following reliable intelligence that Mr. Omosivie frequently came to Uyo to traffic young women to various African countries for prostitution and other illicit activities.”

    She said acting on credible information, a surveillance team located and apprehended the suspect at a hotel on Ring Road 3, Uyo, and during the arrest, police rescued two victims.

    ”Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, a deportee from an African country, had recently trafficked two other young women: Odo Asuquo Asuquo, 18, to Libya in July, and Glory Asuquo Asuquo, 16, to Burkina Faso on August 18.

    ”The suspect has confessed to the crime, admitting he was paid N50,000 per victim.

    “The parents of the victims who were already trafficked have been contacted to provide a statement.”
