The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, September 24, handed over N80 million recovered from a man who defrauded a Delta state businessman, Ifeanyi Innocent Madueke, by selling him 146 acres of land without delivering the property.
The EFCC disclosed this in a statement on its official X handle stating that the draft was presented to Madueke by the Acting Zonal Director of the Benin Zonal Directorate, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad.
According to the commission, 42-year-old Madueke purchased the land in a community in Delta state for N232.8 million from Austine Muanya Okafor but was unable to take possession of the property.
The commission said all efforts by Madueke to take ownership of the land failed, prompting him to approach Okafor for a refund.
However, his request was unsuccessful, leading him to petition the EFCC.
The commission said its investigation revealed that Madueke transferred the money to Okafor in three tranches.
Presenting the recovered funds, Sa’ad said the commission would continue to carry out its duties professionally and with utmost integrity.
“Fraudsters will never be allowed to reap where they did not sow,” he said.
Receiving the N80 million draft, Madueke expressed gratitude to the EFCC, saying he had almost given up hope before petitioning the commission.
“I am grateful to the Commission for what they have done. I had lost hope before I came to EFCC. I thank the management and staff for the good work they are doing,” he said.
