The United States (US) government is set to approve a $2.8 billion arms package for Israel, US reported on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with the deal including 40,000 one-ton bombs.
The Washington Post reported that the package, funded by US taxpayers, includes some of the most destructive munitions in Western arsenals.
The reported package includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads.
US president Donald Trump had approved the sale, citing a US official.
However, a senior administration official told AFP that all foreign arms sales were going through the appropriate process but declined to comment on pending transactions.
A US State Department spokesperson also told AFP that the department does not confirm or comment on proposed arms sales until they have been formally notified to Congress.
The report comes amid an ongoing munitions shortage within the US military, with stocks reportedly declining amid the war with Iran. The US also spent $22.3 billion on munitions between February 28 and June 30, according to the reports.
In February 2025, the Trump administration approved the sale of more than $7.4 billion worth of bombs, missiles and related equipment to Israel, including MK-84 munitions.
The previous administration of former US president Joe Biden had blocked a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel over concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza. The Trump administration later approved the shipment after taking office in early 2025.
