Florence Ajimobi, Nigeria’s ambassador to Austria, on Sunday, September 20, was appointed the country’s governor on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors for the 2026-2028 term.
Her appointment followed Nigeria’s election to the IAEA board during the 70th regular session of the agency’s general conference in Vienna, Austria.
Ajimobi, who is also Nigeria’s permanent representative to the IAEA and other international organisations in Vienna, will represent the federal government on the board and its committees.
She will participate in deliberations on the IAEA’s programmes, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, and international cooperation.
Ajimobi will also articulate Nigeria’s positions at board meetings and contribute to discussions on the agency’s policy direction and activities.
Nigeria’s election to the board and Ajimobi’s appointment would strengthen the country’s engagement with the IAEA and its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.
The statement said the appointment would provide Nigeria with an enhanced platform to deepen international cooperation in areas where nuclear technology can support national development.
It listed healthcare, agriculture, food security, water-resource management, and human-capacity development among areas where nuclear technology could support Nigeria’s development.
Ajimobi, who is Nigeria’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Austria, is expected to use the assignment to advance the country’s interests and strengthen its voice within the global nuclear governance architecture.
