Nigerian-born correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), Eberechukwu Emmanuel Igwe, was arrested in the United States (US) on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and charged with family violence assault causing bodily injury after beating his wife during an argument over clothes and hats.
According to a complaint filed by his wife in April, the incident occurred in March when she moved Igwe’s clothes and hats to another part of their home after the area where they were kept became flooded.
The complaint stated that Igwe became angry when he returned home, leading to an argument that allegedly turned physical.
His wife accused him of grabbing her around the mouth, causing an injury above her upper lip.
She also claimed that Igwe struck both of her shoulders with a closed fist. The woman told police she later noticed an injury to the back of her head but did not know how it occurred.
The victim was subsequently taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital, where a law enforcement officer interviewed her in the emergency room and reported seeing a small, bleeding scratch above her upper lip.
Following the complaint, a magistrate found probable cause to issue an arrest warrant, leading to Igwe’s arrest on September 10.
He was subsequently indicted on a Class A misdemeanor charge of family violence assault causing bodily injury.
The 50-year-old Igwe joined the TDCJ as a correctional officer in 2016.
He is the fourth Nigerian national associated with the TDCJ to face criminal charges this year.
In July, another TDCJ correctional officer, Bashir Oladimeji Lawal, was arrested over public intoxication.
In May, Ayodele Abiodun Afosi was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident after causing damage, while Oluwayomi Obed Edom was arrested over possession of synthetic cannabinoids and methamphetamine.
