President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, September 20, congratulated the winners of the by-elections held across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, after All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates secured four of the five seats contested.
The elections, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, September 19, covered one federal and four state constituencies across the four states.
The APC candidates who won were Kallamu MaiJama’a for the Gombe Kwami Funakaye federal constituency in Gombe state, Husseini Datti for the Dawakin Kudu state constituency in Kano state, Okolosi Ator for the Udu state constituency in Delta state, and Yakubu Ali for the Disina state constituency in Bauchi state.
Adamu Yakubu of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) won the Sakwa state constituency in Bauchi state, giving the party its only victory in the five contests.
In his reaction, Tinubu said the victories recorded by APC candidates demonstrated what he described as continued confidence in the party’s capacity to govern effectively and deliver shared prosperity.
The president also said he was encouraged by what he described as grassroots support for the party and the reforms implemented by his administration.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and not be swayed by what he termed political opportunism, adding that the benefits of the reforms would become increasingly evident as the administration enters the next phase of its programme.
Tinubu urged the winners to justify the confidence of their constituents through diligent and effective representation.
He also encouraged the other candidates to accept the results in good faith and continue contributing to the democratic process.
The president commended voters and security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the elections and praised INEC for conducting the polls.
He urged the electoral commission to build on the progress recorded during the by-elections and address any shortcomings ahead of future polls, including the general elections scheduled for January and February 2027.
According to INEC’s published timetable, the presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state house of assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
