Enugu state governor Peter Mbah on Monday, September 21, appointed Nollywood stars Rachael Okonkwo and Eucharia Anunobi, alongside 99 others, as special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants.
The appointments were announced in a public service announcement signed by the secretary to the Enugu state government, Chidiebere Onyia.
Rachael Okonkwo was appointed Special Adviser on Film and Creative Industry Development, while Eucharia Anunobi was appointed Special Assistant on Women Mobilisation for Enugu-North Zone.
The governor also appointed six senior special assistants and 88 Special Assistants with portfolios covering areas including inter-party affairs, legal and regulatory compliance, youth engagement, women mobilisation, environmental protection, community development, public communication, media relations and project monitoring.
The appointments bring the total number of newly appointed aides to 101.
The seven special advisers are Chief S.N.C. Nwagu, Conflict Resolution and Mediation; Fidelis Odo, Inter-Governmental Affairs and Co-ordination; Augustine Okoli, Policy Affairs and Analysis; Pedro Nwankwo, Stakeholders Relations and Community Affairs; Chimezie Nkwuo, Economic Development; Vitalis Okonkwo, Grassroots Coordination; and Peter Andy Omeje, Commerce and Business Development.
The six senior special assistants are Rachael Okonkwo, Film and Creative Industry Development; Okey Ude, Inter-Party and Mobilisation; Chinedu Chukwunwike, Party Monitoring; Peter Chukwujekwu Ogbe, Legal and Regulatory Compliance; Chukwudi Ozoeluba, Boundary and Land Dispute Resolution; and Frank Udemezue, Small and Medium Enterprise Development.
The bulk of the appointments comprised special assistants, whose portfolios cover areas including security, environment, youth development, women mobilisation, communication, infrastructure, community engagement and grassroots mobilisation.
Among them are Alachi Aaron Onu, Forest Protection and Conservation; Okwoigwe Modestus Ndubuisi, Health Facility Maintenance; Eucharia Anunobi, Women Mobilisation, Enugu-North Zone; Okwudili Onuora, Security Intelligence; and Chukwudi Nwatu, Social Media.
Other portfolios include Market Decongestion, Road Infrastructure Maintenance, Humanitarian Band and Entertainment, Civic Education and Voter Awareness, Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Cooperative Development and Empowerment, Non-Indigene Relations, Technology and Innovation, Youth Empowerment and Skills Development, and Rural Development.
The appointments also include responsibilities for public enlightenment, advocacy, environmental management, urban beautification, social welfare, monitoring and evaluation, government communication, political liaison and inter-governmental affairs.
A political scientist based in Enugu, Ifeanyi Nnamani, said the appointments to portfolios such as Inter-Party Affairs, Voter Awareness and Grassroots Mobilisation could be viewed in the context of the forthcoming general elections.
“The spread of these appointments, particularly the inclusion of specialists in youth engagement, women mobilisation, and inter-party relations, is a classic pre-election strategy,” Nnamani said.
He added that the appointments could help strengthen the party’s structure at the ward level and improve communication of the administration’s policies to the electorate.
The statement said all the appointments took effect immediately.
