The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, September 16, arraigned Idris Gana Mohammed over alleged N6.85 million fraud before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja.
The Abuja zonal directorate of the EFCC arraigned Mohammed before Justice A.M. Abdullahi on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation and obtaining money by false pretence.
The charge involved N6.85 million allegedly paid to Mohammed for the purchase of a black Toyota Camry from Ampatech Nigeria Limited.
The charge read: “That you Idris Gana Mohammed sometimes between 10th and 13th June, at Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly converted to your personal use the aggregate sum of N6,850,000.00, being payment for a black Toyota Camry from Ampatech Nigeria Limited and hereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Law of the FCT and punishable under Section 309 of the same Act.”
Mohammed pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.
Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, G.G. Gajere, asked the court to commence trial.
Defence counsel, Ibrahim Jibril, informed the court that he had filed a bail application and served the prosecution. He also made an oral application for bail.
After hearing from both counsel, Justice Abdullahi adjourned the case until Thursday, September 24, for commencement of trial.
The judge also ordered that Mohammed be remanded at the Kuje correctional centre pending further proceedings.
The defendant was arrested following a petition by Mohammed Ahmed Patigi of Ampatech Nigeria Limited over the alleged fraud involving N6.85 million meant for the purchase of the black Toyota Camry.
According to the EFCC, Mohammed allegedly neither delivered the vehicle nor refunded the money paid by the petitioner.
