A final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, Oluwole Oluwaseun, committed suicide on Tuesday, September 15.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the death, expressing sadness over the incident.
He said the university received information involving the student at an apartment in the Damico Area, Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, and immediately the institution’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team proceeded to the location.
The Nigeria police were also contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined them.
The student was conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.
He said the university was concerned by the death and had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for investigation.
The university has also notified the student affairs authorities for follow-up, particularly on the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.
The vice-chancellor, prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has extended the condolences of the university management to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased at this difficult moment.
He also expressed concern for students and members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.
OAU urged the university community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
It further urged any student experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures, or other challenges to seek help promptly from trusted persons and the appropriate university support structures.
The vice chancellor has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of staff and students.
“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” the vice-chancellor said.
The management assures the university community that appropriate authorities are handling the matter and that further information, where necessary and appropriate, will be communicated through official channels.
