12 killed, 3 abducted as gunmen attack mining site in Plateau

    Gunmen attacked a mining site in Ratoso fan community, Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau state on Tuesday, December 16, killing 12 people and abducting three others.

    The national president of the Berom youth moulder association, Barrister Solomon Dalyop, said the attack occurred around 9 p.m. on Tuesday while miners were engaged in legitimate mining activities in Barkin Ladi.

    He stated that the gunmen attacked the miners without provocation, killing 12 people, abducting three, and injuring five others.

    The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue those abducted.

    The chairman of Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation (BECO) and secretary of the Barkin Ladi mining committee, Dagallang Davott, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

    He noted that several other people are missing but their number remains unclear due to the attack occurring at night.

    “The gunmen stormed the mining site and opened fire on the miners.

    “So, many of them fled for their lives during the incident but 12 persons so far have been confirmed killed,” he said.

    Residents said the third division of the Nigerian army has been alerted about the incident.
