The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has repelled a kidnapping attempt in Guto village, Bwari area council, Abuja, following a gun battle with armed men, leaving two assailants dead and one police officer killed.
The attack reportedly occurred on Wednesday morning at about 1:10 a.m. on November 20, when an estimated 30 armed men stormed the village in an attempt to abduct a resident and members of his household.
The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Thursday, said the officers overpowered the attackers, neutralizing two of them, while the rest escaped into the surrounding bush.
“Responding swiftly, the Bwari division’s surveillance team, in conjunction with the inspector general of police special intervention squad, mobilized to the scene.
“Upon sighting the police team, the attackers opened fire.
“The officers responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers in a heated gun duel.
“In the ensuing firefight, the police team neutralized two of the assailants, while the remainder fled into the surrounding bushes and mountains for safety,” the statement read.
The police officer who sustained a gunshot injury during the confrontation was rushed to Bwari general hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
FCT commissioner of police, Miller Dantawaye, has deployed additional security personnel to the area to restore calm and ordered a comprehensive investigation aimed at tracking down the fleeing suspects.
