On Sunday, July 28, a truck driver and his assistant were said to have fled after crashing into a bus on the Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State, resulting in one death and nine injuries.
In a separate incident on the same expressway, a container truck crashed in the Odo-Gomez area, causing the death of a motor assistant.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the first accident happened in early hours of Sunday, July 28, near the Remo Majestic Hotel, on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.
The collision involved a Bus Mass Transit vehicle with the number plate FFF 282 XC and an unregistered Sino truck.
The TRACE spokesperson added that eyewitnesses reported the truck was traveling at high speed when it lost control and crashed into the bus, which was carrying 10 passengers.
He said, “Based on the eyewitness account, the truck lost control due to overspeeding and rammed into the BMT bus with a devastating impact.”
He added, “the injured persons were taken to Idera Hospital while the body of the deceased was deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
“After the end of the rescue exercise, the injured victims were recorded totalling nine.
“All the injured victims were from the bus including the dead.
“Regrettably, the driver and motor boy of the truck that caused the accident ran away.”
Giving an update on the second accident, Akinbiyi disclosed that a motor assistant died when a containerised truck crashed along the Odo-Gomez area of the expressway.
The accident occurred at the early hours on Sunday, July 28.
He said, “Another fatal lone RTA involving a containerised truck inbound Sagamu Area Command Junction around Odo Gomez has just occurred.
“The motorboy attached to the vehicle is presumed dead.”
He noted that the injured victims and dead bodies from both accidents were taken to Idera Hospital and the hospital morgue respectively.
“The accident vehicles have been towed to allow for traffic flow while the presumed dead bodies have been taken to Idera morgue, and the injured to Idera Hospital respectively,” Akinbiyi said.
The TRACE spokesperson, however, expressed condolences to the victims’ families while urging motorists to shun speeding when driving on the highway.
“While TRACE, FRSC and the police commiserate with the families of the dead and injured victims, motorists are again urged to eschew speeding because of its attendant consequences,” he concluded.
