A 2-year-old boy, Kiaire McCoy has accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a gun in the sofa at the family’s home in Michigan, United States.
The boyfriend to the deceased mother, Markus Nevills has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The 22 year old objected to being charged at his first court appearance.
Nevills told police he had been stopped paying attention to his environment while high on cannabis and was on his phone when the boy shot, according to a Michigan court filing.
“I don’t understand this. I’m trying to see how they’re saying this is my fault. I didn’t shoot and kill him,” Nevills said in court.
The toddler apparently found the gun at the home in Kentwood and shot himself on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“It sounds like a terrible accident, and there is no criminal intent there,” Richard Zambon, Nevills’ defense lawyer said.
