The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that 20 medical students abducted along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road have been released.
The students, from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were on their way to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention when they were kidnapped by bandits.
Their abduction sparked widespread outrage, prompting Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to deploy tactical operatives and resources, including helicopters, drones, and specialized vehicles, to ensure the quick rescue of the kidnapped students.
Additionally, extra detectives were dispatched to Benue State to assist in rescuing the abducted medical students.
In a message to our correspondent on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that no ransom was paid, contrary to social media speculation.
Adejobi confirmed that the students were rescued from their abductors through a tactical and professional operation.
“Release of 20 medical students and others. We confirm the release of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity on Friday, August 23, 2024, in Ntunkon forest, Benue State.
“Without any ransom paid. Contrary to some tweets and unconfirmed stories that some money was paid, no kobo was paid to release them.
“They were actually rescued tactically and professionally.
“We commend the security agencies, locals, and Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) for their commitment and resilience. Thanks to you all. More details soon,” he said.
