Officials in India said that at least 21 people perished on Tuesday when a bus plunged off a bridge, because the driver dozed off behind the wheel.

South of the state of Madhya Pradesh’s capital city of Indore, the car crashed through a barrier and fell about six meters (20 feet) onto a dry river bed.

A senior police official stated that at least 21 people have died.

There were 10 women and three children among the deceased. The bus driver dozed off behind the wheel prior to the collision and sped away.

Despite owning just 1% of the world’s vehicles, India is responsible for 11% of road fatalities, according to a World Bank report published in 2021.

This same report shows that 150,000 people die in car crashes in India each year, or one every four minutes.
