The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has reported the rescue of three individuals from the debris of a collapsed building in the Garki area of Abuja.
Identified as Unity House on Nkwere Street, the building collapsed on Monday, July 1 night, according to a statement from Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, issued on Tuesday, July 2. Benneth Igweh, the Commissioner of Police, mobilized patrol teams to the scene promptly after receiving a distress call.
The spokesperson said relevant agencies are now managing the situation.
“In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, PSC, mni, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams as first responders to cordon off the area for possible rescue,” the statement reads.
“Three (3) victims were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building and rushed to the hospital for medical care.
“The attention of the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria and FCT Development Control has been drawn to the situation and their personnel have taken charge of the area for robust management of the scene.”
An eyewitness, who reported the incident on condition of anonymity, mentioned the possibility of casualties.
“There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble now and taken to the hospital while rescue operations are ongoing. The emergency responders are not coordinated yet for efficient operations,” he said.
