According to sources in Makurdi, a soldier was killed and two of his colleagues were seriously injured during an encounter with gunmen who invaded the rural community over the weekend.
According to locals, soldiers from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) stationed at Agagbe responded to a distress call and encountered the bandits at Tse-Abwa in Gwer West LGA.
“It’s a confirmed story; people suspected to be herders invaded the Ikobi community, and six lives have been lost in the last four days,” Umoru said.
Meanwhile, the state police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, stated that she did not have the information.
However, in a statement, Flight Lieutenant Katty Audu, spokesperson for Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), confirmed the attack on the Ikobi community and stated that three soldiers were injured in the encounter with the armed herders.
“Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke received information about an attack on the Ikobi community on February 4th, 2023, at about 5pm and responded immediately,” he said.
Though tense, the situation has been stabilized”.
