5 arrested over coup plot on Brazil’s president Lula da Silva

    The Brazilian police has arrested five individuals who were accused of a coup plot on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, weeks before their inauguration in the year 2022.

    This was revealed via a statement by the Brazilian police, affirming their arrest on Tuesday, November 19.

    According to the statement, most of the individuals under investigation are military personnel with special forces training.

    “A detailed operational plan called ‘Green and Yellow Dagger’ was identified, which would be executed on December 15, 2022, aimed at the murder of the elected candidates for president and vice-president,” the police said in a statement.
    Adding that, “Investigations indicate that the criminal organization used a high level of technical-military knowledge to plan, coordinate and execute illicit actions in the months of November and December 2022.
    The police executed five arrest warrants, although they did not release any names, along with three search and seizure warrants and 15 other precautionary measures.

    These measures included prohibiting the suspects from contacting each other and restricting them from leaving the country.

    The police stated that the suspects under investigation had planned to establish an ‘Institutional Crisis Management Office’ to handle issues arising from the coup.
    They also intended to capture and kill a Supreme Court justice if their plot succeeded, although the police did not disclose the name of the judge.

    The Brazilian army also monitored the federal operation against the coup plotters, which took place across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Amazonas and the Federal District.

    This is the first time in the investigation that federal police have revealed a plot targeting Lula and his vice-president.

    Lula won the presidential election in October 2022, defeating the incumbent right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, and officially took office in January 2023.

    A federal police investigation is expected to conclude that Bolsonaro conspired to orchestrate the attempted coup after losing the election.

    The investigation is anticipated to be completed this month.
