The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that the total number of active electricity customers nationwide increased from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025.
This information comes from NERC’s latest Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, published on its official X social media platform.
The data covers all 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in the country.
Of these customers, 6.58 million are metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, slightly higher than July’s 54.71%.
In August, 70,888 customers were newly metered, compared to 76,783 in July, showing ongoing efforts to expand metering across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
NERC attributes this progress to reforms and investments by DisCos aimed at improving billing transparency and consumer trust.
Among the top performers in metering coverage were: Ikeja Electric 84.83%, Eko Electricity Distribution Company 84.25%, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company 73.92%.
Earlier, in April, NERC fined eight DisCos including Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola over violations in estimated billing for unmetered customers, with total fines exceeding ₦628 million.
DisCos were also instructed to credit affected customers.
Separately, NERC reported that 225,631 meters were installed nationwide in Q2 2025, a 20.55% increase from Q1. Of these, 147,823 meters (65.52%) were provided under the meter asset provider initiative, 65,315 through the Meter Acquisition Fund, 12,259 via vendor financing, and 234 under the DisCo-financed scheme.
