Nigerian activist and Executive Director of Enough is Enough, EiE, Nigeria, Yemi Adamolekun, was harassed by security operatives at the Lekki Toll Gate on Monday while attempting to lay flowers in remembrance of victims of the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
The civic group, EiE Nigeria, revealed the incident in a post on X, stating that Adamolekun was confronted by security personnel despite her peaceful commemoration of the tragic event.
“While peacefully laying a wreath in remembrance of the #LekkiMassacre, #_yemia was harassed by overzealous security agents. Even in honouring the dead, citizens are intimidated. She’s fine — but this abuse of power is not,” the post read.
Prominent human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, also denounced the reported harassment, writing on X, “I condemn the harassment of notable human right activist Yemi Ademolekun of #EiENigeria by security agents who have no respect or regard for human rights in Nigeria.”
The #EndSARS protest, which erupted nationwide in October 2020, was a youth-led movement against police brutality, particularly targeting the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS. It became one of Nigeria’s most defining civic uprisings in recent history, symbolizing calls for accountability and justice.
The movement’s tragic climax occurred on October 20, 2020, when security operatives allegedly opened fire on peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, sparking global outrage.
Monday’s incident took place as civil society organizations, activists, and citizens continued to commemorate the anniversary of the protest, renewing demands for justice for the victims and accountability for those responsible for the violence.
