The protest against rising hunger in the country has begun in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State, at the Ikeja under bridge, a group of activists has assembled to kick off the #EndHunger protest.
They are prominently displaying banners bearing diverse messages, including calls for government action, statistics highlighting food insecurity, and appeals for solidarity from the public.
The protest’s primary goal is to highlight the escalating food crisis and urge immediate measures to alleviate hunger across the nation.
Some of the inscriptions on the banners read, “This hunger is too much, President Tinubu, let the poor breathe and Reverse anti-people policies.”
Armed police officers have been deployed to strategic positions around the Ikeja under bridge.
This protest coincides with the celebration of Democracy Day.
Earlier, on Tuesday, June 11 Department of state service, DSS and the police have warned those planning to stage protests in some parts of the country during the celebration of Democracy Day to desist from such acts.
Peter Afunanya, director of public relations and strategic communications for DSS in a statement said that some civil society organisations are planning to stage protests in some parts of the country on Wednesday against what they described as rising hunger in the country.
The DSS spokesperson said some non-state actors are determined to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that could turn violent.
Afunanya urged Nigerians to resist any persuasions to be lawless or cause disorder and anarchy in the nation.
