Activist, Aisha Yesufu, activist and ally of Peter Obi has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Yesufu also declared interest in the 2027 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial race, saying the decision was informed by the leadership experience she garnered in the ADC.
Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Kano, joined the NDC on Sunday from the ADC, citing endless court cases and internal battles within the party.
In a statement on Wednesday, Yesufu said her exit from the ADC to the NDC was driven by the need to honour her promise to always follow Obi’s leadership.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” the statement reads.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC. This time, I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT senatorial seat.”
The activist said she has fulfilled all her obligations to the ADC to ensure a clean transition to the new party.
She noted that in the ADC, she was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” Yesufu said.
“The experience has been invaluable, and I thank everyone for their support and cooperation.”
