A fresh allegation of police misconduct has emerged in Ekiti State, following claims that officers attached to the Ekiti Rapid Response Squad, ERRS, assaulted an American-based Nigerian and his family.
The incident is said to have happened shortly after the family arrived in the state from the United States for a visit with relatives. Witnesses alleged that the officers became hostile after noticing foreign currency among the family’s belongings.
The man identified as Bowale, alongside his wife and their three children, it was gathered, were attacked, arrested, and taken into custody. Accounts from the scene claim the family endured severe physical abuse and threats during the encounter.
It was further alleged that the operatives seized the family’s money, which has yet to be accounted for. Efforts by The Street Journal to confirm whether the family remains in detention, or if their confiscated funds have been released, were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
When contacted for a response, the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad at the Ekiti State Police Command, CSP Marcus Ogundola, declined to address the specific allegations, stating, “Do your job, we have done ours and that is why Ekiti State is the most peaceful state in Nigeria.”
