The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Joash Amupitan, has vowed to protect Nigeria’s electoral framework and uphold the nation’s Constitution.
He made this commitment shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
“As you are aware, I have just taken the oath of allegiance and also the oath as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“I reaffirm that I will defend the Constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as far as they relate to the electoral system,” he said.
Amupitan revealed that President Tinubu had issued him a firm directive to deliver transparent, credible, and fair elections nationwide.
“Not only will I ensure that this is done, I will also engage all stakeholders. No matter how you measure success, you need all stakeholders to succeed,” he stated.
Speaking about the upcoming Anambra election, the new INEC Chairman declined to comment, explaining that he would only do so after receiving detailed briefings from national commissioners.
Earlier on Thursday, President Tinubu administered the oath of office to Amupitan, one week after the Senate confirmed his appointment on October 16 following an extensive screening process.
Later in the day, Amupitan arrived at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where he officially took charge of the commission, accompanied by members of his family and close associates.
With his appointment, Joash Amupitan becomes the sixth substantive head of INEC since Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999.
