The Anambra state police command has arrested a 23 year old woman allegedly involved in the kidnap of a man who was robbed of ₦24 million and his vehicle in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Idemili north local government area of the state.
Spokesperson for the command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to the 33 police station in collaboration with members of Agunechemba security, Nkwelle-Ezunaka unit.
According to Ikenga, the suspect, identified as Okonkwo Onyinye, was captured in the early hours of Tuesday after police recovered a Toyota Highlander SUV belonging to a kidnap victim who had earlier been abducted and robbed of ₦24 million.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the victim was ambushed at Nkwelle GRA gate by five armed men operating in a Toyota Corolla.
“The assailants allegedly forced him into the boot of his vehicle and drove to a bush in Umuoji town, where they dispossessed him of his phone and transferred millions from his account before escaping with the SUV,” Ikenga said.
“Following a distress report, the joint police-security team tracked the suspects through technological intelligence to Nawfia and later to Ogidi, where the gang engaged the operatives in sporadic gunfire before fleeing.
“The stolen vehicle, a white Toyota Highlander with registration number RBC 649 CN, was recovered at the scene, and Onyinye was arrested,” he added.
Ikenga said the suspect is currently assisting investigators with leads to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.
He added that the state police command has intensified patrols across the state ahead of the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and security.
