She also called for stakeholders’ collaboration towards adherence to all protocols established for the containment and control of veterinary disease outbreaks, as they are at high risk of contracting the disease due to the nature of their jobs. She spoke, yesterday, at a workshop on “Identification, Prevention and Control (IPC) of Zoonotic Diseases-Anthrax and others” for stakeholders in the Livestock Industry, for abattoirs and animal market workers, including the livestock farmers in the Ibile Division of the state. According to her, Lagos recorded the disease in two councils in July 2023, which necessitated the activation of Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) on Anthrax, domiciled in the Ministry of Health with a robust One-Health interplay of Human Health and Animal Health Components to curtail the spread of the disease. The workshop was followed by vaccination of animals in five administrative divisions of the state with Anthrax spore vaccine from the National Veterinary Research Institute. She applauded the stakeholders for their continuous support and resilience towards the eradication of Anthrax and other zoonotic diseases, adding that efforts of the government in the fight against this disease could not have had maximum impact without their input. Public Health Expert, Adetunji Osho, explained that the training would be repeated in other parts of the state in the basic languages. He said; “What makes Anthrax different is that it is a special organism that can live in the soil, water or milk for decades. It is covered by a shell that protects it and stays there till it finds an animal or human it can infect, and when this happens the consequences are bad, especially if there is no urgent treatment. It’s very important for us to know, classify, typify it in case of an outbreak.” Stating that the virus is resistant to heat, he said a preventive measure is to boil meat, using heat higher than cooking temperature over a given period of time. He listed other preventive measures as hygiene and urged butchers to avoid slaughtering dead animals for consumption.
