At least four mobile policemen were killed in a recent attack by armed herders in the Udei community, Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.
The community leader and former Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, Matthew Mnyan while Confirming this incident, stated that the assault commenced around 11:00 am in Asha, near Ortese, as the assailants attempted to storm the adjacent of Daudu community, but were repelled by a combined team of security agencies and the village youths.
He said that as the confrontation intensified, soldiers from the area deployed an armoured truck and engaged the assailants for approximately one hour within the bush.
He noted that the assailants first invaded the Asha community, where they fired indiscriminately, driving residents from their farms.
The violence, extend towards Ortese, a community that houses thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
He said, “Before you knew it, they started moving and shooting at Dudu.
“In what looked like a coordinated attack, they also attacked Udei at about 2 pm, and four mobile policemen were killed in the shootout.
“When I got the information, I immediately called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who took his men there to repel them”.
He mentioned that, “When I called the Area Commander he said he has mobilised to Udei and I learnt they went in their numbers but it is getting dark and people are entertaining fear”.
Mnyan noted that, “Even the IDPs in the Ortese are all in fear and keep calling for more security.”
