Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have arrested a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba.
He is suspected to be the mastermind behind the killing of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.
The operation was carried out late on Saturday, December 14, following credible intelligence that Wurgi was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, for injuries sustained in a violent clash with a rival group.
Military intelligence confirmed that Wurgi was apprehended after being transported to the hospital with severe injuries, including multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.
During the operation, two of his accomplices managed to escape, but the troops arrested another individual who had aided Wurgi’s transport to the hospital using a tricycle.
The late Emir of Gobir had been abducted in July from Sabon Birnin Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and was tragically killed on August 22 after ransom negotiations, involving cash and motorcycles, fell apart.
Wurgi is believed to have played a pivotal role in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the Emir.
Reports also identify him as an international arms trafficker and a relative of the infamous bandit leader Bello Turji. Additionally, his son, Sani Duna, is allegedly part of the criminal network, serving as a getaway biker for Turji.
The arrest of Wurgi represents a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism in Nigeria’s Northwest. He is currently being held at an undisclosed location, while security forces continue to search for his fleeing accomplices.
Residents across Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states have commended the operation, expressing optimism that it will reduce the devastating impact of banditry and restore peace to the region.
