Arsonists burn down monarch’s palace in Imo

    Some yet-to-be-identified arsonists, on Thursday, September 30th, razed down the palace of HRH Eze Obi Ralph Ekezie, the traditional ruler of Obor Autonomous Community in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

    The Nation reports that there were no causalities in the incident as the monarch and his family members were said to be in Owerri capital when the arsonists struck.

    An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the arson caused some damages to the monarch’s property and two other buildings around the community.

    He also said the fire was later put out by the combined efforts of good-spirited individuals in the community.

    HRH Eze Obi Ralph Ekezie confirmed the incident. He however blamed those he called enemies of progress in his community for the act.

    The monarch further said he was monitoring the development from his abode in Owerri, capital of Imo State.

    He expressed sadness, saying the level of damage can not be ascertained now until he gets home.

    The Police spokesman of the state, CSP Michael Abattam also confirmed the burning of the traditional ruler’s palace, saying “it is true.”

    Similarly, arsonists also attacked the house of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former leader of Orlu Legislative Council, Hon. Nwagba Gozie, in Orlu.

    Residents have been relating their experiences in Orlu as houses were being burnt and people killed.

    A resident said, “Houses are being razed. The entire Obor-Umutanze community has been deserted.”
