The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday suspended its 5-month-old industrial action. The decision to suspend the strike was arrived at during the meeting of the union held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.
The suspension of the strike came on the heels of the compromise reached during a negotiation brokered by the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwahid Omar on December 11. The union had embarked on a meeting on Monday fueling speculation that the strike was about to be called off.
The suspension was officially announced by ASUU President, Dr Nassir Fagge at a press conference in Minna.
One of the resolutions that brought the strike to an end was that a dedicated revitalization account would be opened at the Central Bank of Nigeria by the Federal Government and that funds shall be paid into the account on a quarterly basis from which the universities will draw.
It was also resolved that the N 200 billion that was agreed on as 2013 Revitalization Fund for public universities shall be deposited at the CBN and shall be disbursed to the benefiting universities by the Implementation Monitoring Committee.
