The national industrial court has adjourned the suit filed by the federal government against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to Monday, September 19.
The federal government had on Monday, September 12, urged the presiding judge, Justice Polycarp Hamman, to order the union to call off its seven months strike.
Justice Hamman, in his ruling, adjourned the matter until Friday, September 16, to enable both parties to file the necessary papers for the suit.
The claimant in the matter was the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, while the president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, was the sole defendant.
At the resumed sitting on Friday, September 16, counsel to the federal government, James Igwe, asked the court to give the suit an accelerated hearing due to the urgency of the matter to enable the students to return to school, according to The Witness.
Igwe told the court that since the matter was already in court, it would be proper for the strike to be called off, pending the determination of the suit.
However, Justice Hamman, adjourned the suit until Monday, September 19, for further hearing.
Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had on February 14, 2022, commenced the industrial action over the failure of the federal government to yield to its demands.
The union is demanding, among others, the release of the revitalisation fund for universities, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, deployment of the University Transparency Accountability System (UTAS) for the payment of salaries and allowances of lecturers, release of the white paper report of the visitation panels to universities and the renegotiation of the ASUU-FG 2009 agreement.
