The governing council of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has terminated the appointment of senior lecturer identified as Dr. Usman Aliyu for sexually harassing a married postgraduate student whose name is Kamila Aliyu.
This was disclosed via the university’s official publication, ATBU Herald on Tuesday, April 22, following the council’s 96th regular meeting.
The lecturer’s dismissal was approved after the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee found him guilty of misconduct.
The letter of dismissal read, “Following the report of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee that found you guilty of an indecent relationship involving a student of the university, Mrs Kamila Rufai Aliyu of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, the council has subsequently approved your dismissal from the services of the university with immediate effect.”
The student had earlier submitted a petition to the university last year, accusing the lecturer of sexual harassment and claiming he threatened to jeopardize her academic progress if she refused to meet his demands.
While reacting to the accusations levelled against him, Dr. Aliyu filed a defamation suit against the student, the department, and the university.
Despite the ongoing legal action, the university continued its internal investigation into the matter.
Alhaji Abdullahi Suleiman, Senior Deputy Registrar of the Senior Staff Establishment, stated that the council’s decision was guided by Chapter 3, Item F, I (o) of the university’s Senior Staff Conditions of Service.
The termination letter also directed the lecturer to hand over all university-owned items in his possession.
Adding that, “You are hereby directed to hand over all the property of the university in your possession to the Head of Department and your identification card to the Chief Security Officer of the university.”
