The Commissioner for Information in Niger State, North-central Nigeria, Muhammed Sanni Idris, has been abducted by armed bandits.
According to reports, Idris was abducted from his home in Baban Tunga town, Tafa Local Government Area of the state, in the wee hours of Monday, Aug. 9.
Confirming the commissioner’s abduction, Mary Noel-Berkje, the spokesperson to the governor of the state, Abubakar Bello, said that security forces had begun a search-and-rescue operation.
“We hope they will discover him soon and rescue him unharmed,” Humangle quoted her.
Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson in the state, also confirmed the incident.
Niger State has suffered several bandit incursions and the commissioner’s abduction is the latest high-profile case of kidnappings.
In January, over 42 staff and students were abducted from the Government Science College Kagara at midnight. After weeks in captivity and the intervention of popular Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, the victims were freed.
Similarly, over 100 children abducted from an Islamiyya school in Tegina town in the state, are yet to regain freedom after more than two months in captivity.
The Street Journal had earlier reported that the ransom bearer who delivered the sum of N20m in exchange for the children’s freedom was also abducted by the bandits.
