Bandits on the night of Thursday, September 25, struck at the students’ quarters of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic, BUPOLY, in Hadejia, Jigawa State, unleashing violence and dispossessing students of their belongings.
The assailants, it was gathered, stormed the hostel located along the Malam Madori road, assaulted occupants, and carted away several mobile phones. Though they attempted to abduct some students, the effort failed as the victims’ cries attracted attention.
An eyewitness recounted, “It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”
Another source said, “If not for the loud shouts and screams of the students, we wouldn’t have known what happened. Neighbours from nearby communities rushed to help, forcing the attackers to flee.”
Two students of the institution also narrated their experiences. One stated, “We heard loud noises and commotion and saw people running away with phones in their hands. We were very scared.”
Another added, “They entered our dormitory with weapons, attacked us, and stole several phones without warning. Thankfully, we escaped unharmed.”
Confirming the incident on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer for Jigawa State, SP Shi’isu Adam, clarified that the attack occurred at an off-campus male hostel rented by students.
“The location is quite isolated, which made it vulnerable to the assault by the unknown armed men,” he explained.
He further disclosed that officers stationed nearby responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
“From our records, two students were seriously injured during the attack, They were promptly taken to the Hadejia General Hospital for medical treatment. As I am speaking to you this evening (Friday), they have been discharged by the medical doctor,” he said.
Adam assured that police had commenced investigations to track down the attackers, while additional security measures had been deployed around the school and its surroundings to forestall similar incidents.
